From the inventor, Nick Sagnella: “As the one responsible for our company’s robotic lawn mower program, I’m always searching for better ways to do things. Early on, we quickly found that the most common problem among robotic lawn mower installations was accidental wire breaks. Most of these breaks occurred when the customer would edge their lawn next to the concrete and, if the mower crosses concrete anywhere, would cut the wire. One of our directors came up with a really great process to avoid this problem that involved drilling holes in the concrete and connecting the wires about 4″ deep next to the concrete. This method is very reliable and stopped the accidental breaks. Through numerous iterations and lots of testing, we invented the Wire Hawk. It transformed a task that used to take 15 minutes and reduced it to 30 seconds. During a robot installation of 20 consecutive homes, we had to make about 90 passes over concrete. The method of drilling the concrete and making new connections proved extremely time consuming and nearly ruined a $200 hammer drill. After this experience, I set out to design a solution that would speed up the process and deliver comparable defense against edging.
