They wear out and I finally figured out why I’m on my third replacement cap and finally figured out why these don’t last long. The apparatus on the top of the cap works fine and doesn’t wear out. The problem is that there are two very small nibs on the axle of the cap that wear off. The nibs hold the spool firmly against the sprocket mechanism. See pictures of old and new.
